For a long time, I struggled to make reading homework meaningful for my students. Simply writing down books on a log and having a parent initial was not enough for me. I want them to not only enjoy their reading, but learn how to make their reading more meaningful -- by thinking more critically and writing more thoroughly.
In came my reading response sheet linked with my reading bead reward system!
I have put together 3 different reading response sheets that get incrementally more challenging. We are on the trimester system at our school, so at the start of each trimester, I change up the form. I have included two versions of the reading response homework sheets: the first is trimester based and includes a section to record if a reading bead has been earned; the second is not trimester based and does not include a reading bead section.
The forms are as follows:
Trimester/Form 1: Character, Setting, Predict, Summarize, Favorite Part -- Color and write (with handwriting lines)
Trimester/Form 2: Character, Setting, Predict, Summarize, Recommendation -- Writing only with check boxes for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and detail.
Trimester/Form 3: Character Compare/Contrast, Problem/Solution, Predict, Summarize, Theme -- lines only, no checklists.
When students complete their homework entirely, to their best ability and with great effort, they can earn a reading bead. I have a bulletin board with ball-chain necklaces that sit empty at the start of the year. Students work to achieve a bead a week. Once they meet milestones (10, 20, 30...), they can earn a "special bead" or a brag tag. They LOVE the beads as a reward for their hard work and I have never received better work! I included a couple of pictures of my bulletin board in the document.
I really hope you enjoy this product as much as my students and I do!!
