This weekly journal activity has proven to be very valuable in covering many of the Common Core Standards for Reading and Writing. Students will summarize something they’ve read, reflect and analyze the content, provide details and examples for their findings, and practice formal letter-writing skills.
Give each student a 3-ring folder with many sheets of loose leaf paper OR a notebook. Cut and glue the topic choices to the back part of the folder or notebook so students always have them as a reference. Maybe even find a place for the rubric as well. Every Monday give a new Response Journal assignment that will be due by Friday morning. Students can either write their letter on the current chapter book being read in class or let them choose their own book to reflect on. There are 10 different topics the student can choose from. You can decide if it is always “student choice” for these topics or you can assign a specific topic based on what your focus for the week is.
Included in this resource are separate direction sheets for fourth and fifth graders and a rubric.
