Reading Response Journals are an effective alternative to traditional 'reading logs'. I created these journals a few years ago for my 5th graders, and they could be used up to 8th grade and as low as 3rd grade.
This packet includes 8, 2-3 page single themed reading journals. The themes are: Connections, Summarizing, Predictions, Making and Inference, Character Traits, Elements of the Story, Character Traits with Quotes, and Important Events. Each RRJ is a week's worth of reading responses, 20 minutes per night. Themes are given in the order that I teach and assign them, but may be used in the order you see fit
My Grading System
I grade student RRJs on a daily basis. I assign a check plus, check, or check minus, based on completion and response quality. For weeks that have 4 days in the school week each day is worth 25 points, then for a 5 day week each response is worth 20 points. Either way, points are taken off for a check (5 points off) and check minuses (ten points).
This Reading Response Journal Packet has shown to improve students' written responses to reading selections, and has genuinely improved stubborn readers’ love of reading. Also, these journals improve students reading comprehension, helping them to develop deeper connections to what they read.
