Reading Response Letters: How to teach them and examples
This is a lesson plan on how to teach students to write quality responses to their reading. It teaches students to write responses that include the follow criteria:
• is focused on one topic
• includes a brief (a few sentences) summary of the reading
• includes an opinion, inference or conclusion drawn from the text.
→ includes several pieces of textual evidence to support the opinion, inference or conclusion.
• is at least an entire page
The file is 10 pages and includes a scripted lesson plan that shows you how to teach students to write their responses, a letter to the students about the responses, a page for students that includes ideas for responses, two examples of written responses, and a rubric to assess the responses.
The example responses are for the books, Ish by Peter Reynolds and Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya. I teach the students to write responses using these picture books, but the knowledge is then applied to their independent just right books.
I teach this lesson with sixth grade students, but it could be applied to fifth grade as well.
