This template can be used to have students respond daily to their independent reading in writing. It is set up for Monday-Friday use, but could be edited to two or three days a week.
Teachers will add in open response questions with this editable template. Teachers can chose questions that go along with their current lessons, or use it as a review of previous lessons. You can ask students to write their thoughts on current reading strategies (example: Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then Summaries, or STP - Stop, Think, Paraphrase, or 2 Wonders and a Wish, compare and contrast, literary elements, etc.)
While grading, teachers can monitor student comprehension, writing and grammar skills. Also, teachers can be sure students are reading a 'just right book' based off of Lexiles. This could be changed to match what your school uses instead (DRA, Lexiles, etc.) or you can take that off the template all together.
Students can use this to keep track of what pages they have read, or as notes of their reading for book projects.
To use this product: download it and type in questions you would like your students to respond to. Be sure to change the directions to match your targeted instruction (number of sentences, grammar preferences, book level requirements such as Lexile or DRA) .
Be sure to look for a Fictional Reading Response Log and a Non-Fictional Response Log that will be for sale at my store soon! It will be set up with a blank template, and 9 weeks of daily questions. One will be for fictional stories, the other will be for non-fiction reads.
