As I was looking for reading logs for my second graders, I couldn't find any resources that not only touched upon in-text comprehension questions, but having them think outside the box to answer some "beyond the text" questions as well. This is when I decided to create my own!
Attached are 2 reading logs and 3 short answer responses to help student strengthen their written response skills. Students must answer questions each day. This is perfect for extra homework, in class assignments, or differentiation.
I have sent this home as homework having them respond to one page or a certain number of questions each night to at the end complete a week's worth of reading. Having students choose one book a week helps them become fluent in decoding that particular story and then making connections and having them focus on different story elements of that specific book.
In other years, taking away the parent initials, I have assigned these reading response logs during literacy centers. This was a perfect informal assessment so I was able to see which type of comprehension skills need to be reinforced and which skills they need more of a challenge with.
