Written Response: Independent Reading Comprehension Notebook
Responding to text, writing a constructed response and writing to explain are important skills for students to master. This resource is designed to provide students with regular opportunities to respond in writing after reading both fiction and nonfiction text. The pages are created to fit in a spiral or composition notebook. Everything you need to begin using reading response notebooks with your class is included in this 40 page item. If you are already using ELA interactive notebooks with your class, these pages can easily be added. Very little cutting and pasting is required, so your students can get to the task of writing in response to what has been read!
Written response journals or notebooks can be used following independent reading, after a read aloud, during reading workshop, as a writing center or as a homework assignment. You may assign this as a whole group activity or use it during guided reading with a small group.
The prompts cover a variety of reading skills and are designed to promote higher level thinking:
~making connections text to text, text to world, text to self
~looking back at predictions
~central message or moral
~point of view
~comparing/contrasting two selections on same topic
Several options for cover designs are provided. You may also use the colorful product cover page as a binder cover to store your master copies.
