Description

This resource is a high engagement collaborative reader response activity for comprehension checks to be used with small groups in your classroom, while still holding each individual accountable. Each page contains a reading response question (that will work with a variety of texts), information about the type of question, spaces for students’ individual answers on sticky notes, a space for them to collaboratively build their best answer using the individual responses, and success criteria for reader responses.

This activity works with read alouds, whole group novel studies, shared reading activities, literature circles, content area reading … basically any activity where the whole class or groups of students are reading the same text.

There are 100 different reader response questions included in this Stick It Together resource, covering a huge variety of comprehension strategies, literary and story elements, genres, and text structures.

There are 4 different questions for each of the following topics in each category:

  • Comprehension Strategies (Asking Questions, Determining Importance, Inferring, Making Connections, Summarizing, Synthesizing, Visualizing)
  • Story Elements (Plot, Setting, Characters, Theme, Conflict)
  • Literary Elements (Author’s Purpose, Figurative Language, Point of View, Tone and Mood)
  • Genre (Fictional Narrative, Informational Text, Persuasive Writing, Poetry)
  • Text Structure (Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect, Description, Problem and Solution, and Sequence).

There is also a blank page (editable in PowerPoint) for you to add your own question. Each main section in the Table of Contents is hyperlinked for easy printing of the pages you require.

Levelled exemplars (Levels 1 - 4) and a rubric are also included.
