The page shouldn't take longer than 5 - 10 minutes to complete. Students are only to jot quick notes to "hold their thinking." This way, after reading, they can get started right away with their writing. The paper is a framework to organize their thinking and trigger their thoughts from their reading.
This will enhance the level of student's writing not only by supplying the reader with their thinking but now including support/evidence for that thinking. Students are being asked to share their wonders, thoughts, predictions, etc... and justify those statements with specific examples from the story allowing the reader to better understand where their conclusions were drawn.
This helps students focus to apply those reading skills in a more advanced way to fine tune their deeper understanding of what they're reading. They move from "re-telling" their stories and explaining their thinking to more advanced strategies of thinking beyond the text and incorporating more inferences.
