This pack is geared toward students in grades 3rd-6th, although younger students could use it depending on interest and abilities. It is intended to be used by students who are reading fluently, who have moved beyond the oral narration stage, and who are capable of writing sentences and short paragraphs to express their ideas.
Do you ever feel like your students do a lot of reading but don’t necessarily have a lot to “show” for it? Are they in a rut of doing the same old routine of reading chapters and then completing comprehension questions or writing simple narrations? If so, it’s time to change it up!
Do you have an advanced reader, a gifted and talented student, or even a reluctant reader? If so, this pack might be just what you’re looking for. The pack contains tons of “outside the box” activities and offers the kind of VARIATION and INTEREST that both advanced and struggling readers benefit from.
With this pack, your child can create a complete booklet for any chapter book he/she reads. Better than a hum-drum book report, the finished product will be a UNIQUE and PERSONAL representation of the learning that went on throughout the reading of the whole book. The completed booklets would be ideal for end-of-year assessments, such as portfolios. They would also be very meaningful items to keep in a personal portfolio or memory-box to remember the books read throughout a given school year.
There are 12 cover pages choices to pick from to record the book title and author and the student’s name and date. Next, there are 40 different reading response worksheets to pick from. Your student can choose one to complete at the end of each chapter he/she reads, and the response worksheets can be used for both fiction and nonfiction books. They feature lots and lots of ENGAGING and CHALLENGING writing and drawing activities! Finally, there are 12 different “book review style” culminating response sheets to wrap-up the book, and these also feature a range of writing, drawing, and art ideas.
This pack reinforces important concepts such as:
sequence of events
facts and opinions
identifying new/unfamiliar vocabulary
using graphic organizers
This pack utilizes high-order thinking activities such as:
describing with details
comparing and contrasting
expressing ideas and opinions
Best of all? The pack can be used across multiple grade levels, with multiple homeschooled students in the same family, and re-printed as often as needed. There is enough variation in the cover page and reading response page choices that you can use this same resource for book after book, year after year!
(Co-op or classroom teachers: This resource would be perfect for classroom use, too!).
