This is a reading comprehension/reading response mini-book of questions that students can keep in their desk all year long. It works with any text and gives students an opportunity to select their own questions to respond to.

Each page contains a “What do good readers do?” habit, followed by a related question. At the bottom of each page of the booklet are four squares. Students check off a square when they have completed a question. By placing a “you can only do this question four times” limit, my hope is that this will encourage the child to respond to a wide-variety of questions. It also adds an accountability factor that students and teachers appreciate.

I like that this activity really gives students ownership over their work. I think when we do this, we can not only keep all students more focused and engaged, they’re more excited to write about a topic they’ve chosen and my hope is that you’ll get really high-quality work from your students because of this.

The booklet contains 28 reading response questions. It is broken up into three sections: before, during and after reading questions.
Some of the questions include:

• Good readers activate their prior knowledge. What do you already know about the subject of this book?
• Good readers reflect on a text after reading. If you were to buy a gift for the main character, what would you buy them and why?
• Good readers think about the main idea of a story. Name a major event from the text. Why was it important?

This booklet can be used during guided reading, for students to use while working on book reports or even during literature circles. It’s also perfect for whole group instruction.

It’s child-friendly, but not overly cute, making it appropriate for students in Grades 3-6. Having said that, there are two versions of the cover and section dividers in case you find one more suitable than the other.

I’ve also included color versions of the more primary covers (the ones with the characters).

This booklet is also really useful for when children go on vacation and parents request work to be sent along. You can simply have the child choose their own novel and then assign a number of “My Choice” questions.

To assemble the book, cut each page apart, staple and then “bind” the book with decorative duct tape (see photo in preview) . It looks great when it’s all put together and easily fits into a small Ziploc freezer bag for protection from the desk monsters.

Thank you for visiting my store. Please ask all questions before purchasing. If there is something I can do to make this product more suitable to your needs, please let me know, I’d be happy to help.
