This friendly competition is meant to support readers throughout the year. Some schools provide a reward for reading a specific number of minutes each year, my school encourages 600 minutes each semester. This product is a method to keep track of those minutes and celebrate the milestones in between. Your students who love competition are going to love this! Your students who need a little extra push to continue to read, this is also for them, I am talking REWARDS! My parents love this because they want a way to be connected to the classroom.
Each student receives a ”Rockstar log” they will use this log to track the book, pages, and minutes read. Students must sign their log as well as their parent. I send an email or a newsletter home with each child explaining the Rockstar challenge. For my class, I send home homework Monday night and collect it throughout the week, it is officially collected on Fridays. This is also the day that I collect the reading logs. I tally up the minutes, mark that I have tallied the minutes, and return the log if there is still room for reading slots. I use an excel sheet to keep track of my student’s minutes but you can use a hard copy if you so choose. I also list the top 10 readers on the board each week. When a student reaches a new milestone goal we celebrate with a goal ticket and a round of applause in the classroom.
Use the Rockstar Leaderboard to post the top 10 readers each week. I laminate the page and hang it in my classroom. I use a whiteboard maker to frequently change the minute leaders. This helps keep your classmates in the know of where they stand in the top 10. Just watch the friendly competition push your students to read more!
Students will use a tracking sheet to collect the amount of minutes read each week. An Excel spreadsheet has been created so you, you just need to add students’ names and minutes read for the week. Auto Sum will calculate for you! Then you can use the leaderboard to display the top 10 readers and award students for their milestone minutes.
