How to use the Reading Rods
Center Activity: You can choose or have students choose which reading rods to use. In first grade we used the consonant blend rods later on in the school year. I have included a worksheet for each word family, plus two other kinds of worksheets for each of the vowel sounds and blends. Students put a Consonant or blend next to word family rod and write the word in the appropriate box on the worksheet. Then they choose another consonant or blend card and do the same. If students are doing the vowel sound and blend worksheets (end of the packet) I tell them they need to do at least 4-5 words with this word family before choosing a new word family card. This gives them practice with reading word chunks along with short vowel sounds. Note: You may choose not to use a worksheet and just have students write out words on a white board or practice reading words without writing.
Partner Work: I have used this activity as a partner activity or with our 4th grade buddies. Follow the same procedure as above, but alternating who is working the rods and who is writing.
Real Words Or Nonsense Words: (One sheet for each vowel and each blend)--Students write the words made in the appropriate box. In our testing students are asked to read nonsense or silly words so this is a good practice for them.
Short Vowel Strips (6 strips, one for each vowel and all short vowels; 4 strips for each blend)—Give students the short vowel strip you would like them to use with the word family cards. Students are to write down words that they make with the magnify glass and consonant and blend cards.
Make Short Vowel Words/Make Consonant Blend Words (1 sheet for each word family, including blends)Students use all the vowels/consonant blends to make word and write out words.
