***UPDATED READING SKILLS POSTERS WITH A FRESH NEW LOOK!!! (Aug. 9, 2013)***
*Make sure to check out the preview for a closer look!!! I absolutely love them! (There's a few freebies in the preview as well!:)
The first version of reading skills posters are still included. :)
These vibrant and concise skills posters are to reinforce skills you are working on during reading and writing. I teach skills very explicitly so I introduce a skill with one of the posters, and then I post it up on the board. We have collected these as we have practiced the skills. We revisit them on a regular basis so my students are using the vocabulary more as well as understanding the concepts. These are excellent, kid friendly anchor posters for all year long.
**The newly updated set of reading skills posters also has 5 of the skills posters that utilize a coding letter to represent the skill: characters, setting, main idea, cause and effect, and fact vs. opinion. ((I have also included these 5 posters without the letters in case you would rather not have them on the posters.)) While reading in a book club, on own, whole group, or small group, I teach my students how to flag important information and interesting parts with post-its, etc. With these skills, I want my students to get in the habit of naturally identifying different elements of literature as they read. So when they come to a new character, they can label it with a "C" on a copied passage or use post-it type paper to code it. This will help these elements become a natural, fluid part of their reading.
*Also newly added is a new main idea puzzle activity where students put together a puzzle (larger pieces are perfect), and then draw the picture on the puzzle on their graphic organizer. Finally, they will determine the main idea/topic of the puzzle, and write it in a complete sentence on the lines. This activity could easily be a center/rotation/independent activity as well as a small group! You'd be surprised how my kids don't know how to figure out a puzzle. :)
Using the first version reading skills posters, there are Reading Skills Reference Sheet/Bookmarks/Snapshots that are snapshots of all the skills posters in one spot for quick reference during reading time!! With the first one I simplified the posters so they are easier to read in a condensed version but still enough alike the full size posters. The bookmarks and other reference sheet to follow has the full replica of the posters on them. You can see which one would be best for your students! There are different font sizes so you can see which one your students could read best. This can be printed on cardstock and used for reference during reading lessons or put into a reading reference folder as well. :)
I've added over 14 graphic organizers/quizzes/tests to go along with the skills posters. I have a whole explanation page to describe how I use each one in my classroom. I also have a Bulletin Board Banner or cover sheet for the Recipe Book for Character Traits.
I have also included a Reading Skills Matching Game which reinforces the reading skills from the posters. I will have the Theme and Compare/Contrast Posters to add this week. This is a great way to keep the reading skills fresh in their minds all year round!! :)
