Within our district we use Accelerated Reading to encourage our students to "earn" rewards for their amount of reading and passing of AR Tests. I have come up with a plan that will put a little more into it than just earning points. My students will still earn a "prize" such as a dollar trinket or they can choose to eat lunch and play games during recess with the teacher. Through this process, students choose which skills they would like to independently work on to improve their reading skills. This has worked fairly well in the short time that I have implemented it and I am working on a full year of pages along with various grade levels. This product is used for when students are earning points for their reading. We do have lower elementary classes that work toward a goal of how many books they read.
The teacher and student have a conference time where individual reading skills are discussed and through prior assessments the skills that need to be worked on are addressed and the student will choose which of these they would like to start to work on first. I have also included other genres (to expand the student's reading) and started with a small choice of options for students.
In our class we start with 4 points at the beginning of the year. This goal tracker also provides students with practice in calculating remaining points and using subtraction of decimals to aide in the understanding of parts of a whole.
I hope that you find this useful and if you have any questions please email me at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
