This anchor chart is an enlarged version of my Reading Strategies Bookmark to display in your classroom. My Reading Strategies Poster has the five most important decoding strategies for children who are learning to read. After teaching the children these reading strategies, you could then have the students use this anchor chart to help prompt them as to strategies they could try independently when they come to an unknown word. They could use the anchor chart in reading groups or when reading independently in the classroom. The anchor chart will also remind students to cross check by asking themselves: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
Print the anchor chart on card stock and laminate. Add each reading strategy one at a time to the anchor chart (in a column like the bookmark) after introducing it and modeling it to the class. Then refer to the anchor chart as you are practicing the reading strategies during shared reading and guided reading.
