These strategy cards have been designed to use with students during modelled, shared and guided reading. They are used to establish and revise with students the focus identified for their reading session. While they are based on The Daily CAFE, they are not endorsed by the 2 Sisters. It is a resource developed for our use in the classroom based on The Daily CAFÉ Book reading ready reference forms. Their particular strength is when working with a guided reading group. Having the card on the table or pinned up for the group provides a constant reminder to both students and teacher of the session intent. Our students now look to the table to see what the strategy is they will be working on when called together. The intent statements are provided in three formats.
1. ‘To…’ this format supports the student in being able to state what they are working towards.
2. ‘I am learning …’ statements support the student in telling what they are working at.
3. ‘I can …’ allows the student to state what they have achieved. This intent can be added to their folio and or displayed in the classroom as goals achieved.
These cards can be used for display purposes, student folios, parent discussions, newsletters – the possibilities are endless. We hope both teachers and students find this resource useful.
