This Freebie reading strategies card can be used as a classroom poster, or as a card that you use when you teach the different reading strategies kiddos should use when they come to words they do not know when they are reading. It includes the following strategies:
Look at the pictures.
Blend the sounds together.
Break big words into smaller pieces,
Look for chunks I know inside of words.
Think about what would make sense.
Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence and re-read.
After trying a word, think...
Does it make sense?
Does it sound right?
Does it look right?
I also wrote an emergent reader where kiddos learn, while they read about these same strategies. The same pictures are used for each strategy that are on this card. Using the card first helps kiddos know what the pictures mean in the emergent reader. For the emergent reader just click on the link below:
Emergent Reader: I Can Use My Reading Strategies
In my guided reading groups, I use this card to first teach my kiddos the strategies, and then I keep in on the table for kids to refer to during their reading. I have them tell me the strategies they will use when they come to words they do not know before we begin reading.
