CREATE CRITICAL THINKERS! Make the child show you what they know and explain their reasoning and thinking. This fun, printable packet is designed as an assessment tool or simply a summary of learning for reading concepts, aligned with the CCSS Reading Anchor Standards. I have designed this with my 5th graders in mind but it can be adapted for 3rd,4th and 6th grades too.
This packet includes 21 posters ( and a blank template for own creation) covering Non-Fiction and Fiction Literacy concepts. (main idea, questioning, inferring, synthesizing, sequencing, plot, theme, character traits, character development, summarizing etc.)
The text included in some of the posters is used more than once. This is intentional so that, as the children work their way through the concept posters, they can see how the metacognitive skills can be connected and used to aid our comprehension.
The posters are all meant to have the children explaining their understanding of the concept through words, diagrams and pictures. I wanted the students to be independent with this and I set the expectation that each poster had to include explaining their strategies, examples based upon their knowledge and skills within each concept.
There is also a rubric for the students to record their reflections about each concept as they work through them over the course of the school year. They are then able to see their own progress.
Perfect for back to school as an engaging pre-assessment and as an-on going assessment tool.
I used these as a summary of learning and then recognized the value as a formative assessment tool and also a summative resource.
It requires the children to think critically about their knowledge and how best to present this as a poster and in limited space, therefore forcing the necessity of clarity and concise information. The posters can be used as part of guided reading, literacy centers activities and independent reading using the current book they may be reading.
We created a colorful reading comprehension wall to show how we were knowledgeable, using the concept posters.
