Description

Use the 2 handouts in this resource with both fiction and non-fiction texts to give your students practice using reading strategies. If your students know what reading strategies are but only use them in their English class, then these handouts are for you!

You can use this resource remotely in 2 ways:

a) Use TpT's Easel by TpT tool to create a resource your students can use on a device.

b) Send/email photocopies of the graphic organizers and picture dictionary pages home or tell students to print them out themselves if they have access to a printer. Tell students to use the organizers when reading textbooks or novels. Tell students to create a personal picture dictionary when reading other texts and novels. They can send/email their work back to you if you wish.

These 2 graphic organizers are helpful when reading all types of genres. You can use them for jigsaw reading of social studies or science books, when the whole class or small groups are reading a story, and in literature circles. Students can also use them when reading independently.

You can have students focus on practicing a couple strategies or tell them to use any and all of them. Just review the strategies before students use the handouts to make sure they know what each reading strategy is. Then have a class discussion about how students used the strategies when they are finished reading and let your students learn from each other.

Ten reading strategies such as using context clues, using text features, creating mental images, and self-questioning are included. Each page lists the same reading strategies but is used for a different purpose. The handouts are helpful when students are reading non-fiction textbooks and when they are reading novels during independent reading time.

This resource also contains 2 pages your students can use to create their own picture dictionary of reading strategies. There is a cover page, which students can decorate if they wish, and a page for describing one reading strategy. Students have to define it, explain how and why they use it, and draw a picture that illustrates how they use it. This page is meant to be photocopied so for each reading strategy students use, they will fill out a separate page.

In addition, tracking sheets for teachers are provided in this product. Any time you ask students to practice a reading strategy when reading a novel, textbook, or other non-fiction text, you can record the reading strategies on these pages. Writing them in list form like this makes it easy to see which ones you have already used and then you can easily plan which reading strategies you still want students to practice.

A list of the ELA Common Core standards this product addresses is included in this resource for the convenience of teachers who work in Common Core states.

Originally created for English Language Learners in Grades 5 - 8, all students can benefit from using these reading strategies handouts.
