This is a reading strategies Mat that you can use with your students all year. Start the year by teaching or reviewing strategies used to figure out unknown words. After modeling the strategy, Give the students the Reading Strategy Mat. Again, model for the students by reading the text and demonstrating what strategy you used to figure out the word. Write the word beside the strategy you used. For example, the strategies Get your Mouth Ready and Look at the Pictures, you could choose a leveled book to model the strategy with the students. Demonstrate how to use the pictures by choosing a word from the text and then pointing to the picture. Ask the students to look at the picture, now look at the word. Point to the first sound....."Get you mouth ready to say the first sound. Does the first sound match the picture?" Have the student write the word beside which strategy helped them the most. If both of the strategies helped, then write the word in two places. Use direct instruction and modeling when teaching each strategy.
