Description

This Fix Up Strategies pack is a great resource to use all year long to help your students learn and apply reading strategies they can use when they come across a difficult word both in a story and out of context. The fix up strategies in this pack can be used when reading both fiction and non-fiction text. Seven different fix up strategies are included: slide through the words, using picture clues, word parts- looking for little words in big words, switching it up (vowel sound), word clues- looking for digraphs, vowel patterns & blends that you already know, repeat your reading and think, think, think about what you read. There are 7 posters and mini posters included in this pack. There are also 3 differentiated activity pages/graphic organizers for each strategy so students can apply their knowledge of each strategy before reading stories on their own. The differentiated versions include words, sentences or stories at a K/1 level. The differentiated activity pages and graphic organizers work well for use during word work in guided reading groups or during literacy centers. You can introduce each strategy first with the poster and then have each student practice with the activity page, differentiated based on their ability. Students will either be reading and/or highlighting words, sentences or stories or filling out a graphic organizer to practice applying their knowledge of the strategy. For example, after you introduce the 'sliding through the words' strategy, students will practice reading words, sentences or stories on the activity pages. These activity pages provide immediate practice after you model how to use the strategy with difficult words. You can also use these pages for 1 on 1 assessment throughout the year to determine who is still struggling with the various strategies. This pack is great to use all year long because you may have students using the different activity pages throughout the year based on the progress they make with their reading ability. After learning the strategy and practicing with these activity pages, students can then apply their knowledge to their guided reading stories or books at their instructional/independent level. These fix up strategies posters and activities have helped my students greatly when it comes to figuring out a difficult word!
