Here are the skills that are covered in this product.
The way that I organize this in my classroom is that I have a class set of each reading passage, 5 total passages in all. I choose a skill to focus on for the week. For example, I may begin with character and setting. Monday I do passage a, Tuesday is passage b, and so on. I only do the questions on character and setting. I reference my anchor charts as needed. To save on copies we project the questions and do them as guided practice. Then I only need copies of the passages for each child. On Friday the students get passage E but must do the skill independently. * Important. Do not run passage front to back with questions. You will reuse the same passages next week but focus on a new skill with new questions. Repeat this process and assess on Friday choosing one of the passages to be an independent practice.
A note about my passages
These passages are an average of 380 words. That is what our new state assessment will be using in its reading passages.
I do the same passages each week to teach students to read with different purposes. It also helps with fluency.
You may choose to not assess for a grade on Friday, but I recommend you assess just to monitor student progress.
Since there are eight skills you can complete the whole packet in eight weeks. The daily time frame is around 15 minutes since there is only about four to five questions per skill.
