This resource is great for explaining to students the difference between reading strategies versus skills, but also to teach students how great readers use strategies to strengthen their skills and monitor their comprehension of what they read!
In my classroom, we use this chart throughout the workshop: mini-lesson, small groups, strategy groups, independent reading/responding, and even book clubs! It has been especially useful for helping students discuss their reading using the academic vocabulary and by discussing ways that they adjusted the strategies used to make sure that the text was comprehended.
Students also refer to this chart during their independent responding and book club discussions/responses. Students choose a skill that we have previously covered and implement one strategy on one response and another strategy on the next.
