Decoding strategies are essential foundational skills for all readers! These posters feature self-monitoring strategies that will help readers figure out what to do when they get to an unknown word. Kids need actionable steps in order to help themselves. These posters could be introduced one at a time and then displayed near your reading table on a bulletin board. These are mini posters measuring 5 x 6’ and are perfect for small spaces.
There are two styles here; one has a black background and the other has a colored background. Also, included are two banners both saying “Help Yourself!” referring to the strategies. These are also small and are 4 to a page. These measure 2 ¾ x 4’ This will make a super cute bulletin board. After all, we want our kids to be independent readers and thinkers.
The strategies are as follows:
flip the letter sound
skip the unknown word
get your mouth ready to say the first sound
use the picture clues
backtrack and read it again
read through the word
take off the ending
use a word you know
look for parts you know
break the word apart
And then the three cueing system questions; Does it look right, Does it sound right, and Does it make sense?
Finally, ask all three.
These posters have visuals that illustrate the strategy and are useful for all learners.
Perfect for small spaces!
