These cards have been designed for use as a Reading Centre activity for ages Prep (Kindergarten) to Grade 1 and 2. Partner Checklists are for use with paired activities and ‘My Reading Checklist’ is for individual students to use during Independent Reading.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Partner Checklists – ‘Questions to help your reading buddy’
Print off as many copies as you need for your reading group and laminate. You need one card per pair. For example if you have a group of 6, you have 3 pairs and therefore 3 cards.
Each pair sits together. One partner is the ‘Reading Helper’ and has the ‘Questions to help your reading buddy’ card, a whiteboard marker and little eraser (white cubes of magic sponges work the best for this! If you have access to a ‘Daiso’ store they sell them really cheap. Otherwise they are available from most supermarkets). The other partner who is the ‘Reader’ chooses a book that is appropriate for their level of reading, ideally a text that is at an instructional level.
The Reader begins reading and when they reach a difficult word, they turn to the Reading Helper to assist them.
The Reading Helper then uses the prompts on the card, starting at number 1, and says “Have you tried looking at the picture?”. If the reader tries this and is still unable to read the word they respond “Yes” and the Reading Helper ticks the green box on the card with the marker.
The Reading Helper continues with the prompts on the card until the Reader has decoded the word. If they are unable to decode it after using all prompts, then the Reading Helper can assist them.
Once they have decoded the word, the Reading Helper erases the ticks and the Reader continues reading until they reach another tricky word. Then it starts all over again!
Independent Checklists – ‘My Reading Checklist’
Print off as many copies as you need for your reading group. You need one card per student.
The card works in the same way as the partner cards however students use the card on their own when they come across a word in the text they are reading that they cannot decode.
