I love Jennifer Serravallo's Reading Strategies book. I reference it often when deciding on mini lessons to teach during reading workshop. I know that purposeful explicit instruction is what will move readers. Visual anchor charts with step by step directions will help students cement their learning.
This product was created to teach the emergent reading strategy: I can explain my thinking
I have included an anchor chart. The anchor chart can be either projected or turned into a poster if your district is lucky enough to have a poster maker.
I have also included "idea sticks" for you to make your students. I run them, laminate them, and velcro them onto craft sticks. Students use them during our interactive read alouds when asked to turn and talk to their carpet buddy. They pass the "idea stick" back and forth to signal whose turn it is to share their thinking. My kiddos love anything hands-on that will help them remember the strategy taught!
After, we have spent a week practicing each emergent reading strategy, I put a copy of it in each student's reading binder. When I am conferencing with students individually or working with students in a small group, I like to have the reading strategies at my fingertips. I want to be able to reference my teaching points with each student as effectively and efficiently as possible.
