I love Jennifer Serravallo's Reading Strategies book. I reference it often when deciding on mini lessons to teach during reading workshop. I know that purposeful explicit instruction is what will move readers. Visual anchor charts with step by step directions will help students cement their learning.
This product was created to teach the emergent reading strategy: I can hunt for letters and words that I know
I have included an anchor chart. The anchor chart can be either projected or turned into a poster if your district is lucky enough to have a poster maker.
Also included is a set of pre-primer dolch flashcards. My district has 3 trimesters or 3 marking periods. The expectation is that children will know 10 sight words by the end of trimester 1, 30 by the end of trimester 2, and 40 by the end of trimester 3. Therefore I color coded the words to match the trimester in which they would be taught.
Finally, included is an alphabet chart with lower case letters represented. The children keep this inside their book boxes. They can easily reference it when hunting for letters in books. The hardest working vowels are highlighted in red.
After, we have spent a week practicing each emergent reading strategy, I put a copy of it in each student's reading binder. When I am conferencing with students individually or working with students in a small group, I like to have the reading strategies at my fingertips. I want to be able to reference my teaching points with each student as effectively and efficiently as possible.
