Score 30 points!
Students earn "points" for completing sections, and don't have to complete every part (But most! Don't worry, teachers). Writing a summary earns 7 points but writing down cool words you found just earns 2.
Students love that they don't have to do everything! Their engagement (and thinking) soars when they are deciding which parts to do. And, of course, a few students will probably want to do it all anyway. For grading, grade out of a completion of 30 points.
I use this as a way to encourage strategy usage in personal reading from a book of their choice. I like the time format of giving students reading time of the course of a week (this can be a weekly reading log or weekly homework).
You will find this to be engaging and useful.
