Reading is understanding. It's super important to teach reading strategies and give the kids the tools they need to be successful, fully cognizant readers. When I do a first read, the purpose is to explicitly teach a reading strategy alongside a text. As we're reading, students are taught how to apply the specific strategy we are working on that day. I use these as anchor charts to go with the read aloud.
These were created based on the work of Stephanie Harvey (Strategies that Work and Comprehension and Collaboration). I created concise write-ups of each strategy with bullet points explaining to students how to apply them. I had them blown up to a poster size and use them in my room every day. There are seven posters in all. There are three versions. Two ink-friendly black and white and a color version with tween readers. They are in a zip file.
Thanks for leaving positive feedback! I hope you get a lot out of them.
