Help your students become strong, independent readers by teaching them reading strategies that promote engagement during reading. Teaching students to use these reading strategies encourages them to think about what they are reading, while they are reading it.
Reading strategies need to be explicitly taught and modeled. Model them using a Think Aloud format. Choose a picture book that fits the strategy you are teaching. As you read the book aloud, stop at various places and share your thinking with the students.
