The purpose of guided reading is for students to use reading strategies to support themselves as independent readers. As a literacy coach of a brand-new elementary school, I decided on four reading strategies that we would highlight in guided reading instruction throughout in all classrooms and designed these posters using the crocodile mascot. The strategy posters were enlarged and every classroom has them displayed so that common vocabulary is used throughout the school when guided reading instruction takes place. The four strategies are:
1. Look at the picture.
2. Look at the first letter or chunk of a word.
3. Look for the little words in the big word.
4. Say the first letter sound, skip, and come back.
