Reading Street Common Core Supplemental Resource for Grade 1 - Board Games for Unit 4 - Word Work

Help your students practice their Unit 4 story and high-frequency words (and a few Amazing Words, too) with this fun partner game.

How to play LET'S PLAY:

Needed: 1 game sheet, 1 spinner, 2 players, 2 game pieces, 1 paperclip, and 1 pencil

Directions: Using a paper clip and pencil, Player 1 spins the spinner and moves that many spaces. If the player is able to read the word correctly and can use it in a sentence, the player remains on that spot. If the player cannot accomplish either of those tasks, he/she must return to his/her previous position. If the player spins "Skip a Turn", the play loses that turn. Player 2 continues in the same manner. The winner is the player who reaches the "Finish" spot first on the game board.

I've been using this mainly with my strategic-level students (although my entire class loves playing it!) and I've seen an improvement with not only word recognition, but with the ability to use the words in sentences. Often times in my classroom, my strategic-level students were able to recognize and read the words but had difficulty using the words in sentences. Now, they are using the words in sentences without hesitation. The kids enjoy the game and love to recite silly sentences using the words. Who doesn't like to make their classmates laugh?!

You may want to print the game boards and spinners on cardstock and laminate them to save paper. My class loves to take the games home to play with family members, so I run them off on regular paper and send them home when we are finished with them in class.

The word game sheets may be used with the following first grade Reading Street Common Core stories:

· Mama's Birthday Present
· Cinderella
· A Trip to Washington, D.C.
· A Southern Ranch
· Peter's Chair
· Henry and Mudge and Mrs. Hopper's House

Note: These game sheets may be beneficial in any primary classroom regardless of whether or not you use the Reading Street reading series.

Thanks for stopping by!
