If you’re using Reading Street, then these writing strips are for you!
**I use the 2011 Common Core Edition of Reading Street.**
We use them as glue in prompts for our spiral notebooks. Just copy, "paper cutter” the left and right sides off, then into strips ready to hand out.
There are 3 spiral writes (usually I just have 2). The first one asks students to infer how Adelina's grandfather feels about his first whale encounter. The second asks students to explain how the photographs help the reader better understand the text. The third asks students to discuss how Adelina's point of view makes this different from a typical expository text.
**I didn't 'number' each spiral write in case you didn't feel like using all three- then you'd be able to pick and choose without worrying about skipping around the numbers.
Each spiral write features guiding questions and bullet points to help students generate high quality writing.
I find these are most useful on “Day 4” of the Reading Street schedule. They’re great to have students reread/review portions of the story, and expand on their reading.
I hope you enjoy these and check back for more spiral writes for the other Reading Street weeks!
