In this center, the students use their leveled reader from any reading curriculum and after reading the selected text, choose which genre, fiction or non-fiction, and then complete a task that goes along with that genre. The Non-fiction is set up to help students identify important facts and practice how to summarize them to give a response or write a research paper. The fiction tasks are designed to help student identify the key parts of the story. I have these task placed on a poster board in two rows, one for fiction and one for non-fiction. After they read the task, the kids choose the genre and task they want to complete. My centers are set up with a 15 minute duration. Students usually have time for 1 or 2 tasks.
