Supplement for Reading Street Common Core Grade 1
Sentence Fluency & Graphing, Unit 3
Note: The sight words used in this download are those used in Unit 3 of the Reading Street Common Core 2013 Grade 1 reading series but may certainly be used with any reading series.
This is a fun literacy activity with a touch of math added in for your young learners.
“Color It, Count It, Graph It!: Sentences" includes two pages for each of the following Sight Words:
· always, become, day, everything, nothing, stays, things
· any, every, were, enough, own, ever, sure
· away, house, very, car, our, friends, school
· afraid, how, again, read, few, soon
· done, visit, know, wait, push
· before, oh, does, right, good-bye, won't
The first page of each lesson invites the children to read, find, and color the sight word sentences using a color code. The children are then asked to count the number of times they colored each sentence and write it in the box provided. The second page asks the children to graph the number of times they found and read each sentence by coloring the boxes in the correct columns. The students must then write the sentences that appeared the most and the least.
This makes a great literacy center! Children are actively engaged in a useful activity, allowing the teacher quality time to work with groups of students during guided reading.
It may also be used during partner work, as independent practice, morning work, and more! This is a great activity for intervention reading groups also.
Thanks for looking!
