PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a differentiated Fact, Opinion, or Both? lesson for the Pearson's Reading Street program for grade 5.

It includes:
-a mini-lesson using "A Special League" analyzing fact, opinion, or a statement of both, along with a key for what the expectation would look like.

-THREE differentiated forms/packet for this skill. I would suggest doing the first two as examples using "A Special League" with the whole class by rereading page 118. I provided an expectation for that mini-lesson (shaded background page).
• Strategic intervention group/Below Level: the first set of charts (3pages). All the examples are pulled for the students. They will identify whether it was a fact, opinion, or both and tell how they know. For some examples, some keywords are provided, left blank or they have to find on their own.

• On-Level group: the next set of charts (3pages). All the examples are pulled for the students. They will identify whether it was a fact, opinion, or both, provide keywords that helped them, and tell how they know. They will have to find one example on pg.128 on their own.

• Above level group: the last set of charts (3pages). Some of the examples are pulled for the students. They will identify whether it was a fact, opinion, or both, provide keywords that helped them, and tell how they know. They will have to find some examples and page numbers or fact/opinion/both have been identified and they need to find that type of example on that page.

Additionally, there are two different segment responses where students will analyze character traits for Satchel or how the setting (time period during segregation) would impact the events in the story. Along with each response is a literary experience where students can work independently, with partners, or part of a guided group to prepare for the responses. Use both or differentiate for each group.
