These three activities will help start your fifth grade students by:
-Exploring their new anthology through a scavenger hunt to familiarize themselves with their reading resource
-Thinking about what it takes to be courageous by looking at the pictures on the "Meeting Challenges Unit page in their book and answering a few questions.
-Previewing the entire unit to activate their mind before beginning the first story in unit 1 and a quick writing experience where they can write about a time they needed to have courage to do something.
All of these activities can be used as morning work to activate their mind before beginning reading or can be used as independent work activities in a reading workshop as your are reading and assessing students at the beginning of the year.
