Reading Street's HENRY and MUDGE and MRS. HOPPER'S HOUSE Spelling Pack Supplementary Resources to Include a Focus on the Vowel Sound OO as in MOON.

Daily Lessons to Include:

*Day 1: Vowel Sound of oo; Digraph: sh; Consonants: h, t, s, s, p, c, w

*Day 2: Vowel Sound of oo; Consonants: m, n, n, l, b, s, z, w

*Day 3: Vowel Sound of oo; Consonants: g, f, d, s, p, m, r, b

*Day 4: Vowel Sound of oo; Digraph: ch; Consonants: c, d, l, p, s, r, t

This iinteractive activity increases phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge. Duplicate one sheet per child. (The sheet that has a set of four cards need only be duplicated to meet the needs of your class. Cut these apart into strips and give each child one strip of letters.)

I tell my students to color/highlight the vowels yellow. Color the digraphs orange. Students are to cut out the letter tiles and place them on the matching letter tiles that are on their spelling sheet.

To add a bit of whimsy, my students build their words on placemats that have little OWL stickers on them. Anything that makes learning novel, makes it fun!

If there is one activity a first grader can benefit from tremendously~It's BUILD-A-WORD. If interested, look for upcoming week-long spelling sets that coordinate with the basal series.

*These activities are also useful for students who are working in a slower-paced reading group in second grade. Also, these interactive lessons are excellent for Home-Schoolers:)

FYI: Some of the teachers who purchase this product like to use it in RTI/Reading Groups. My co-workers use it in reading groups. I prefer to use it whole group, because we have a whole system of "Catching the Word", "Letting Out the Individual Sounds", then we "Finger Spell the Word"...it gets so interactive that I find when I do this activity with my reading group, the rest of the class gets too involved and won't stay on task and do their station work; therefore, in my own classroom BUILD-A-WORD is a WHOLE GROUP Activity. No one gets left out...also, I use the white board to have everything on display as we go along to help the less advanced spelling student stay on track.
I like to have BUILD-A-WORD out on my students' tables first thing in the morning. It's part of their morning routine to get their materials set up. It's one of our little rituals...LOL
