Spelling BUILD-A-WORD Interactive Mini-Lessons for the story: Ruby in Her Own Time by Jonathan Emmett.

This week the spelling is going to be taught a bit differently from my typical lessons. This may not be the way you prefer to teach this skill, so be aware of the change this week, in the event you want to customize your own lessons....

I have been teaching primary age students how to read for almost 30 years. During that time, I have found that the typical first grader responds better to learning the Consonant Patterns for -ng and -nk in CHUNKS (with the vowel attached) rather than in isolation. That is not to say that this is the only way I teach these sounds, but it is my preference for teaching spelling and reading of words with /ng/ and /nk/. Some materials call the chunking of sound rimes- glides.

Regardless, they are fun to teach and kids just soak up the sound-symbol knowledge like little sponges. (Just as you have the students write a diacritical mark for the short sound or long sound of a vowel, you can also have them draw a little wave above the glide {I can explain the little wave only as a sideways s...Please email me @ michlenahan@yahoo.com for more specifics about the diacritical mark or any other questions you may have about this spelling unit.)

Day 1: Glide: ing; Digraphs: th, wr; Consonants: b, r, f, l, s, p

Day 2: Glide: ink; Digraphs: th, sh; Consonants: r, b, w, d, s, t, l

Day 3: Glide: ank; Digraphs: th, sh; Consonants: d, p, b, y, r, s, l

Day 4: Glides: ung, ang, ing Consonants: s, p, r, t

This is an interactive hands-on activity that promotes growth in both phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge.

There is a teacher key provided for each lesson.
The student needs only one printable and one strip of letters.
The student colors or highlights the letters: yellow for vowels, orange for digraphs, and green for glides.

After the student colors the sound tiles, he/she places them onto the matching letter tiles that are on their spelling sheet in preparation for the lesson.

Be sure to bring up this file on your ActivBoard or Smart Board. As we complete the lesson I model the spelling of the words on the board. Also, students can model the answers. This is a fabulous lesson when paired with the board.

To add a bit a whimsy, my students build their words on placemats with owl stickers...Anything that makes learning novel, makes it more appealing to little ones:)

Teaching Tip:
There is also an extra sheet included for students to write a sentence activity. (Includes a student rubric) In my classroom, the sentence that I write on the board is the sentence determined by the Teacher's Pet for the day! This way everyone gets to shine at making sentences:) Kids love little routines like this:)

Here is an additional Build-a-Word Pack on the Vowel-Consonant Patterns: ING and INK

Day 1: Vowel-Consonant Pattern: -ing; Consonants: s, l, t, w, p, r

Day 2: Vowel-Consonant Pattern: -ink; Consonants: s, l, t, r, b Digraphs: th, sh

Day 3: Vowel-Consonant Patterns: -ink, -ank; Consonants: b, l, d, r, c

Day 4: Vowel-Consonant Patterns: -ink, -ank; Consonant: r Digraphs: th, sh

This iinteractive activity increases phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge. Duplicate one sheet per child. (The sheet that has a set of four cards need only be duplicated to meet the needs of your class. Cut these apart into strips and give each child one strip of letters.)

I tell my students to color/highlight the vowels yellow. Color the digraphs orange. Students are to cut out the letter tiles and place them on the matching letter tiles that are on their spelling sheet.

*These activities are also useful for students who are working in a slower-paced reading group in second grade. Also, these interactive lessons are excellent for Home-Schoolers:)
