This download contains 30 pages of Spelling Word cards to be used for Rainbow Writing for each story in the Scott Foresman, Reading Street, Grade 1 reading series. I place the activity in my literacy stations/centers. I photocopy the words on card stock, cut them out and place them in a ziploc bag. I leave plenty of copies of the rainbow writing paper that is included in this pack for the students to use with the spelling word cards. I insruct the children to write each word in marker on the worksheet. Each WORD (not letter) should be a different color until they need to repeat a color if they run out of colors to choose. I tell my students that each word should be one color only. My students don't use markers often, (mostly crayons) so this is a big novelty to them and they love completiing this activity each week. And the easy part is you don't need to continually give directions, just change out the cards with the new list. For easy organization I photocopy the cards on different cardstock colors so if one card is found I can quickly find the correct story it belongs to. I will also be posting a free download that includes printable labels of the story names you can place on your plastic bags for organization purposes.
It is a quiet activity that is perfect for children to complete independently while I meet with my reading groups. I use this activity all year long. I have also heard other ways of doing rainbow writing so feel free to use this resource to best fit your needs.
