I made this earlier and figured someone else might find it useful. If you use Reading Street for First Grade, you might do what I do -- give spelling tests weekly. However, I do 5 sight words (High Frequency words, the ones that are specifically from that week's story) and 5 story words that match the phonics pattern from the story. I figure this is a good way to assess their memorization of sight words as well as their understanding of the phonics pattern of the week.
This has worked well for me so far, but I wanted a way to keep track of the words that students were still struggling with. So I made this little checklist of all the words I'll be using in every unit (R through 5), and added slots for students using their numbers (1 through 20). After a spelling test, I'll check which words the students got right and leave the ones they got wrong blank. Then I'll reassess later the next week after having them practice more.
I color coded to save space. Every story (week) has a different color. There are 10 words for each story. 20 slots for each student. This is on Word, so it's editable.
Hope this helps some of you as much as I'm hoping it helps me this year! :)
