I have gone through and identified a mentor sentence from each text for Unit 1. Within each sentence, I have selected words for students to identify what part of speech they are, replace them with various words, rewrite the sentence, and answer a question specific to the mentor sentence. The purpose in doing this is to allow students to see the importance of word choice when writing. By taking an author's words and dissecting them, students are able to see the impact their word choice makes on their comprehension as a reader. This understanding will help readers to carry this knowledge over into their own sentence structures when writing in various content areas.
