Reading Street Common Core High Frequency Words - Unit 1 - First Grade HF Words: Word Puzzles for Fast Finishers - 3X3 Puzzle Grids ~ Challenge ~ Reading Street Common Core Supplemental Resource (2013)
I used these 3X3 puzzle grids with my fast finishers and my students who needed to be challenged a bit. Although these puzzle grids use the unit 1 Reading Street CC high frequency words, they may certainly be used with other reading series.
Directions: Cut out the 9 piece puzzle cards and shuffle them. Arrange the cards in a 3X3 grid so that the interior sides of the cards match up with the same word. Let the challenge begin!
I had my students work collaboratively in the beginning of the year because many of them needed help and encouragement. (It sounds a lot easier than it is!) As time went on, my students would beg to do these! I set up a special table in my room where students could work on these during free time and centers. Some students needed an extended period of time to complete this activity, so we would leave them on the table until the puzzles were completed. The kiddos would ask to take them home to challenge their parents and siblings too!
This download includes 2 versions of 6 puzzle grids (one version without clues/ one version marked with a star on the center card to give the student help) for each of the following Reading Street Common Core (2013) stories:
-Sam, Come Back!
-Pig in a Wig
-The Big Blue Ox
-A Fox and a Kit
-Get the Egg!
I printed the game cards on various colors of card stock paper and laminated them for durability, but you may choose to run it off on copy paper.
I hope your students enjoy the challenge!
