This slideshow was created to provide a more explicit form of phonics, fluency and word reading instruction. This particular free slideshow is for Unit 1 Week 1 Day 1 of the Reading Streets Common Core Version. It is 1 day, where the paid versions are for entire weeks of each unit. I have created slideshows for each unit, week and day.
Before you purchase any PowerPoint, be sure your computer supports PowerPoint. These PowerPoints were designed to be “played”. That means some of the slides are animated and will not run as intended unless you “run” the slideshow. Please check into what that means before you make a purchase. Anytime you show a PowerPoint it is optimal to use a devise which allows you to click through the slides and has a laser. This laser is important as it allows you to point to where you want your students to be attending.
The first slide of each day will always be a sound slide. It contains the sounds taught that day along with previously taught sounds. In Reading Streets, new sounds are taught on Day 1 and Day 2. I use the laser to point at the sounds. I give the students a predetermined amount of wait time before I give them a predetermined signal to respond with the sound as a whole group. After going through all of the sounds, I allow individual turns to students needing them.
The next slides are sound by sound blending of decodable words which come directly from the Reading Streets Teaching Manual for that day. I have also added additional slides of words the children may have struggled with from previous days/units as determined by the Friday formative assessments.
The next slide is whole word reading without sounding out. These words also come from the Reading Streets teaching manual for that day. I use it in the same way as I do the sound slide.
The next slide is the sentence reading slide. The sentences come from the Reading Streets teaching manual as well.
Last is the high frequency word slide. It consists of the HFWs of the week. Day 1 is only the new words of the week. Days 2-5 are that week’s words along with HFWs from previous weeks. I have found these to be very useful in teaching my first graders to read in a more direct and explicit way.
These PowerPoints and the result of a year and half of work. You are welcome to change them with the sounds/words/sentences your students need but please do not share them. Thank you!
