This resource is designed to help you transform one of your school days into a special learning event dedicated to sharing love for reading, and setting the stage for summer reading. I enjoy hosting this event in my own classroom during the last week of school each year, when students need more time engaged in flexible, social activities. A Reading Summit is the perfect outlet for the end of year excitement we see in our young learners each year.

The suggested activities included are ideal for second through fourth grade, but can be edited to meet the unique need of your class. It is important to note that you will need to provide reading materials for your students, books if you choose to include a book raffle, and reader’s theatre scripts of your choice.

Note for Students and Parents: give the families in your classroom all the information they need about your upcoming learning event. This editable note outlines your schedule for the day, and provides a brief description of each planned activity.

Activity Slides: each of the 8 activity slides features a clean, bright design that displays straight-forward instructions to guide your students through each part of their Reading Summit. An editable and uneditable version of each slide is included. All text is editable, images are protected and secured. Reading Summit activities include:

★ Bookmark Bellwork: students will design two custom bookmarks that can be used at home over the summer.

★ Book Swap: Students are invited to bring a favorite book from home that they are willing to contribute to the book swap. Each student who brings a book will get to take a new book home to read over the summer.

★ Book Raffle: Students receive five raffle tickets for a chance to win popular summer reading book picks selected by their teacher.

★ Fresh Air Reading: Students find a relaxing spot to read outside. This is a perfect time for them to take in the fresh air, warm sun, and blue skies as they enjoy a reading moment. A perfect way to get used to casual summer reading.

★ Buddy Reading: Students meet up with a buddy from class, or from another classroom to read together. They also work together to set summer reading goals.

★ Summer Reading Posters: Students create a mini poster advertising the book they think everyone should read this summer. Posters can be shared with parents to inspire summer book shopping and borrowing.

★ Reader’s Theatre Practice: Students select a reader’s theatre script (not included) to practice with a small group. The perfect opportunity to focus on using strong voice projection, and expression when reading so they are ready to perform in front of their classmates at the end of the day.

★ Reader’s Theatre Performance: Each reader’s theatre group will “perform” their script (not included) for the class.

Activity Printables: designed to make prepping your Reading Summit as seamless as possible. A few of the Reading Summit activities become more organized with these coordinated printable resources. An editable and uneditable version of each page is included. All text is editable, images are protected and secured. Please note: the Reader’s Theatre pages are simply folder covers, not a script.
