PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Help students hone their reading skills in an effective, but low-stress, way with these comprehensive activities. Testing season can be difficult, it usually includes lots of practice at a point in the year when our students are beginning to long for summer. The activities in this bundle are designed to review and practice specific reading skills in a testing format to build confidence and knowledge, helping your students become strategic test-takers.

This bundle includes several sets of mini-passage task cards that can be used to review a range of reading skills with focus and precision. The cards are ordered and colored to make them amenable to partner and small group work and the content of the passages seek to interest students during this often tedious season. Break up the monotony of larger-passage practice with these short, interesting, and skill-focused mini-passages.

Each of the products shown below are available individually in my store. This bundle saves you money (Over $15!) and provides you with a varied selection of reading practice to begin your review season. You will also find an introductory document filled with ideas for making test-prep engaging, useful and efficient. Bundle includes:

Vocabulary

Finding the Meaning of Unknown Words- This product includes 20 cards that each feature a mini-passage (about a paragraph) with a single underlined word. Students use context clues to come up with a meaning for the underlined word then record and explain their thinking on a graphic organizer.
Includes: key, 20 cards, graphic organizer/answer sheet

Deciding on a Definition- This product also includes 20 cards, each with a mini-passage that contains an underlined word. Below the passage is a dictionary definition of the underlined word that includes at least three different meanings. Students use context clues to decide which dictionary meaning matches the meaning of the word as it is used in the passage.
Includes: key, 20 cards, answer sheet, mini passage genres: fiction, expository, biography, poetry, drama, persuasive piece

Analysis

Fantastic Fables: Fiction Mini-Passages with Summary Analysis—Each page includes a short fiction passage (from Aesop’s Fables) and four summaries of the passage. Students choose the best summary using a table (printed right below each summary) to analyze the summary and categorize it as ‘strong’ or ‘weak.’
Includes: 9 passages, each with four summaries and four criteria tables

Totally Toys!: Expository Mini-Passages with Summary Analysis— Same as above but with expository passages. These passages are all about toys, students will learn some interesting facts about their favorite playthings as they work!
Includes: 8 passages, each with four summaries and four criteria tables

Writerly Biographies: Biography Mini-Passages- Once again, students read the passages—this time biographies of beloved children’s authors—and choose the best summary by categorizing each summary as ‘strong’ or ‘weak.’
Includes: 10 passages with summaries and tables, key

Main Idea Task Cards— Students read the mini-passage and answer multiple choice questions that have them choose the main idea.
Includes 12 cards, key, student answer sheet

Character Inference Cards— These mini-passages and multiple-choice questions have students make inferences about character’s feelings and motivations. These are challenging! Students will need to go back to the passage and make a case for their inference.
Note: This set reuses some of the passages from the Context Clue set. The products are different and focus on a different skill, I don’t mind the overlap in my own classroom.
Includes: 20 cards, key, student answer sheet

Persuasive Position Cards and Newspaper/Worksheet— Each card includes a statement along with six secondary statements. Students must categorize the secondary statements as ‘For’ or ‘Against’ the original statement. Students then analyze a one-page ‘newspaper’ that is full for persuasive language. Vocabulary covered in worksheet/newspaper: exaggeration, causality, misleading, rhetorical question, contradictory, comparison
Includes: 5 sets with 7 cards each, Newspaper and Analysis Worksheet, key for cards and worksheet

Free Product—This is a sampling of the above products and can be downloaded from free (click here). It includes some of the same mini-passages found above, but I’ve gone ahead and included it in this bundle because it can be used separately from the other products as a small, over-arching review.
