Testing season can be difficult, it usually includes lots of practice at a point in the year when students are beginning to long for summer. The activities in this bundle are designed to review and practice specific reading skills (in a testing format) to build confidence and skill. Many of these activities are perfect for partner work, small groups or intervention groups.
The bundle includes several sets of cards that feature mini-passages arranged around a certain concept (vocabulary, character analysis, summary, main idea, context clues, author’s intent). They are numbered and colored to make them amenable to small group and partner work. Break up the monotony of larger passages with these short, interesting and skill-focused mini-passages.
Each of the products shown below are available individually in my store. This bundle saves you money (Over $15!) and provides you with a varied selection of reading practice to begin your review season. You will also find an introductory document filled with ideas for making test-prep engaging, useful and efficient. Bundle includes:
Finding the Meaning of Unknown Words

Deciding On A Definition
- This product also includes 20 cards, each with a mini-passage that contains an underlined word. Below the passage is a dictionary definition of the underlined word that includes at least three different meanings. Students use context clues to decide which dictionary meaning matches the meaning of the word as it is used in the passage.

Totally Toys!: Expository Mini-Passages w/ Summary Analysis

Main Idea Task Cards
— Students read the mini-passage and answer multiple choice questions that have them choose the main idea.

Character Inference Cards
— These mini-passages and multiple-choice questions have students make inferences about character’s feelings and motivations. These are challenging! Students will need to go back to the passage and make a case for their inference.
Note: This set reuses some of the passages from the Context Clue set. The products are different and focus on a different skill, I don’t mind the overlap in my own classroom.
Includes: 20 cards, key, student answer sheet
Persuasive Position Cards and Newspaper w/ Persuasive Vocabulary and Worksheet
— Each card includes a statement along with six secondary statements. Students must categorize the secondary statements as ‘For’ or ‘Against’ the original statement. Students then analyze a one-page ‘newspaper’ that is full of persuasive language. Vocabulary covered in worksheet/newspaper: exaggeration, causality (cause & effect), misleading statement, rhetorical question, contradictory statement, comparison
Includes: 5 sets with 7 cards each (35 total), Newspaper and Analysis Worksheet, key for cards and worksheet
—This is a sampling of the above products and can be downloaded for free. It includes some of the same mini-passages found above, but I’ve gone ahead and included it in this bundle because it can be used separately from the other products as a small, over-arching review.
