8 Products and over 100 Mini Passages:
Context Clues (Vocabulary)
This product includes 20 cards that each feature a mini-passage (about a paragraph in length) with a single underlined word. Students use context clues to determine the meaning of the underlined word then record and explain their thinking on a graphic organizer.
Includes: 20 cards, graphic organizer/answer sheet
Multiple Meaning Words (Vocabulary)
This product also includes 20 cards, each with a mini-passage that contains an underlined word. Below the passage is a dictionary definition of the underlined word that includes at least three different meanings. Students use context clues to decide which dictionary meaning matches the meaning of the word as it is used in the passage.
Includes: 20 cards, answer sheet, answer key
Students read the mini-passage and choose the statement that best represents the main idea.
Includes: 12 cards, key, student answer sheet
These mini-passages and multiple-choice questions ask students to make inferences about a character’s feelings or motivations. These are challenging! Students will need to go back to the passage and make a case for their inference.
Note: This set reuses some of the passages from the Context Clue set. The products are different and focus on a different skill. I don’t mind the overlap in my own classroom, but some might.
Includes: 20 cards, key, student answer sheet
Card Sort: This card sort asks students to identify an author's position/argument. Each card includes a statement along with six secondary statements. Students must categorize the secondary statements as ‘For’ or ‘Against’ the original statement.
Vocabulary Worksheet: Students analyze a one-page ‘newspaper’ that is full of persuasive language. Vocabulary covered in worksheet/newspaper: exaggeration, causality (cause & effect), misleading statement, rhetorical question, contradictory statement, comparison
Includes: 5 sets with 7 cards each (35 total), Newspaper and Analysis Worksheet, key for cards and worksheet
Each page includes a short fiction passage (from Aesop’s Fables) and four summaries of the passage. Students choose the best summary using a criteria table. Criteria tables help students categorize a summary as "strong" or "weak" (see preview for an example).
Includes: 9 passages, each with four summaries and four criteria tables, answer key
Same as above but with expository passages. These passages are all about toys, students will learn interesting facts about their favorite playthings as they work!
Includes: 8 passages, each with four summaries and four criteria tables, answer key
Once again, students read the passages—this time biographies of beloved children’s authors—and choose the best summary by categorizing each summary as "strong" or "weak."
Includes: 10 passages with summaries and criteria tables, answer key
This is a sampling of the above products and can be downloaded for free. It is a sampling of the same mini-passages found above, but I’ve gone ahead and included it in this bundle because it can be used separately from the other products as a small, overarching review.
