This is a complete and easy to use unit plan for the novel Afternoon of the Elves By Janet Taylor Lisle that can be used with both 4th and 5th grade for a whole class close reading unit, or just as easily and effectively for small leveled reading groups. All Commom Core standards for Reading Literature for both Key Ideas and Details and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas are incorporated into this unit plan.
A reading schedule for students and teacher, 9 reading response questions that have students wanting to write their written responses (and you taking effective common core reading grades), and a culminating activity/final project are included in this unit plan.
Afternoon of the Elves is a thought-provoking book that has been a favorite of my students year after year. (Leave students guessing at genre until the end.) The reading response questions are written as student directions so that they can be copied as strips to be pasted into reading response journals, if you would like to use them that way. The reading schedule is also written as assignment blocks so that they can be copied for students to place into their planners if you are using this unit plan for small leveled reading groups and having students read independently, rather than as a whole-class close-reading read aloud.
