This resource helps to increase vocabulary, develop reading and identification of initial sounds in both upper and lower case. The use of ice cream cones helps to create an attractive and interesting activity for young children.

Preparation – Laminate all pages and cut out letters and pictures.

THE PICTURE AND WORD MATCHING CARDS
The picture and word matching cards can be used as individual work, pair work or as a group activity. Matching the pictures to the words will develop reading skills and teach the names of unknown vocabulary. This task is particularly useful for students new to English, especially if completing the task with a peer who is an articulate native English speaker. If possible, the children should be encouraged to read the words and name the items while they are matching the words with the appropriate pictures. Two sets of picture and word matching cards are included. If required, as an aid to completing the matching activity, one set of cards has the initial letter of the picture as a clue to help with matching.

THE ICE CREAM CONES
The ice cream cones have the answers on the same page. The pages can be used in two ways.
• The page could be laminated and kept like this and the task would be finding
and matching the correct pictures and letters with help from the answer page.
or
• Each page could be cut in half. The task would be to read the words and find
the correct pictures and letters to match the initial sound . The answer card
could then be used for correction.

The pictures and letters are colour coordinated to match the colour of the cones. This makes the task easier by reducing the possible options to be selected for placing on the cones.

As many children enjoy eating ice cream, the use of the ice cream cones make this a fun, interesting and engaging activity.

The words used are :- apple, ant, bin, bus, cat, car, dog, doll, egg, envelope, fan, fish, gate, grass, house, hat, igloo, ice cream. Jam, jug, kite, kettle, leg, log, man, mouse, nut, net, orange, onion, red, rat, sock, stick, tree, train, umbrella, under, van, vase, white, wall, xylophone, x ray, yo yo, yellow, zebra, zig zag
